Ever See a White Deer?

Well, I haven't. There were 4 brown deers and 1 white munching on my lawn. I don't know if there are naturally white deer, or if this was an albino. I just realized the fence (which is only 4 feet but is somewhat of a deterrent) was down behind the shed, allowing deer easy access to my lawn and garden. I've got to get it back up before my perennials get much higher. I've noticed some of them breaking through the ground. Obviously some of them didn't remember the way they got in and were trying to use the gate!

  1. There is, or used to be, a herd of white deer up along Rte 96 near the middle of Seneca Lake. Many of us put them down to evil-doings at the (former) Seneca Army Depot:) I've never gotten close enough to see if they're white or albino. Horse genetics certainly allow for (extremely rare) non-albino white animals, as opposed to the plentiful white-looking grays, so deer may not be that different.

  2. The wooded area is pretty small behind my fence. I guess I was surprised to see any variation as I figured there wasn't a large gene pool.

  3. A white deer! It must be an omen... May you come into a large stash of yarn! :D

  6. Yesterday I happened upon a white deer myself in the woods near my house. I was wondering if there is in fact any meanings or defined omens (other than yarn) for seeing such a creature.
    Thanks!

I've never seen a white deer, either. But we did see a bald eagle flying overhead this morning on the way to the Metro. There's a pair that has lived on the USDA Agricultural Research Center Beltsville farm for years now and we see them from time to time. It's always a awe inspiring to see them.
The area around the Greenbelt Metro station is wetlands--doomed to be plowed under for a shopping mall in the near future despite the best efforts of the City of Greenbelt and many others to save it.
